One of our absolute favorite things is using our back fence as a huge canvas for all sorts of activities. Chalk is probably our favorite medium to use and I feel like I buy regular stick chalk in bulk every month. It seems boring to me because it’s the same thing every time, but how many ways can you spice up chalk? I mean, chalk is chalk is chalk, right? My kids never seemed to mind, but that’s definitely what I felt like to me. Until I was wondering through Michael’s one day and stumbled on these!

$5 each pair, what a steal!! They were even on sale BOGO 50% off when I snagged them! It’s powdered chalk in rollers, spray bottles, pens, and paint buckets.

All I had to do was add water and shake! There was a ton of chalk in it too. I refilled them all twice the first day and then 2 more times the next day!

One of the reasons I love using our fence as a canvas so much is that it’s a HUGE canvas for them! Which means there is plenty of space for them to spread out and work on individual pieces AND then also work together on something.

The other reason I like using the fence is that writing on vertical surfaces are so great for kids. Some of the big ones are:
• Midline crossing
• Shoulder and elbow stability
• Spatial awareness
• Core strength
and the biggest one for us: Wrist extension and pencil grasp
We’re still working on encouraging Brixton’s (4.5) writing confidence, so any new way I can present it to him is super important to me.
