Beginning Sound Sort
Next post
Brixton is learning about letter sounds and is really enjoying telling me all about different rhyming words. Since he’s really picking up on the final/ending sounds, I decided to mix it up on him. I wanted to see if he could pick out the beginning sounds instead. All I needed were some small pieces and loose parts and a couple muffin tins. Basically I did a lap around our living room and picked all the small pieces I could find 💅 To start, I sorted them out and then put a dot sticker with the corresponding letter in the bottom. Then, I tossed all the pieces in a brown bag and we were ready to go!
Before we started, Brixton pointed out all the letters in the tins. When prompted, he also produced most of the letter sounds. This is still a developing skill for him, so I wasn’t looking for 100% accuracy, just an attempt, and I helped when necessary.
At first, Brixton wasn’t really sure exactly what he was supposed to be doing. He’d name the item, then look at me like “ok mom, now what?” So we spent some time sounding out each part of the word, and after a couple minutes it clicked for him! Before long, he was rattling off initial sounds left and right 😍 🎉
We really had a blast with this game. I put it all back in the bag when we were done and we played again the next day. Now I’m on the hunt for some new items 🤔 I should probably go pick up the playroom, I’m sure I have a whole new collection of small pieces up there 😆
